Dutch policies on the international front are limited to emergency aid and assistance for small farmers in countries that are affected. The Dutch government seeks a European approach on food prices, but is not prepared to subsidize this from the money the EU needs to subsidize its own farmers.
The Netherlands has in July put forward an alternative proposal with the same objective, but that respects previous agreements concerning the EU budget. The core of this is: (1) unused budget resources return to the Member States, as agreed; (2) the Council calls on the Member States to put these resources (and possibly others) to use in suppression of the impact of the high food prices; (3) the Commission opens an account where Member States can deposit their extra contributions; (4) Member States decide for themselves if they deploy possible extra resources by means of the Commission or in an other manner.
