Cruise lines don’t barter. If you want to stay in nicer accommodations you will have to pay for them. And I don’t know if you are looking to stay in the $5000 a week suite, but only pay $700 for it.

Sometimes you can purchase upgrades at the pier (based on the prevailing rates).

What some people do is book what is known as Guarantee Cabins. What that is, is you book a certain type of cabin, inside, outside, balcony. But you don’t know what stateroom you will get until right before sailing. So you will get the minimum category cabin in that class. But you could also get a higher class cabin. It’s sort of a lottery/gamble type situation

Not every cruise line offers this.

I’ve seen Carnival do deals, where you book and then get a free two category upgrade.

The more you cruise with one cruise line, the more deals you get and the easier it is to get "luxury accommodations while paying regular class rates"

I talk to a lot of people who want to book cruises and "upgrade" in the process. Basically, with the economy the way it is the cruise lines are eager to fill the ships. This means opportunities abound.

1 – Pick a contemporary cruise line such as Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Carnival Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Disney Cruises, Costa Cruise Line, Princess Cruise Line. They can offer better accommodations right off the bat.

2 – Try getting onboard credits instead. they can range from $100-$1,000 and whatever you don’t use can be applied to your final bill.

3 – Check early booking discounts. You may find really good deals for upper deck ocean-view cabins.

Check with your travel agent or call booking agents at the cruise lines directly and see what promotions they are running. Make sure to add up the dollars you save and see if that can cover the cost of better accommodations.
