The native people of Mexico are also Native NDN people. The native amer. peoples from Mexico and Central and South America had a different culture from us up north. They had more time to build empires like the Romans because the ice age left their land much sooner than it left ours in the north. The Hau’de’no’sau’ne people of the east coast were on their way to creating empire before the white and black people came here. We in the north have left many artifacts that you can find in captivity in the Amer museums.

Actually, that is incorrect. The mound-building Mississipian culture had massive mounds and temples – they simply used different building materials. If you want more information, look up Cahokia Mounds, World Historic site. It is east of St. Louis a few miles, off of I-70. At one time the largest city in the western hemisphere.

The Native Americans of North America DID build "grand" structures. Have you not heard of the Mounds or the Mound Builders? In fact, archaeologists have determined that the mounds here in the eastern USA (we call it Turtle Island) are older than the pyramids of Egypt. They were constructed as burial, ceremonial, & residental mounds. Thomas Jefferson excavated a mound & noted many similarities between the mound builder funeral practices & those of the Native Americans who lived during his time. There are many located from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. One of the most famous is the Serpentine Mound in Ohio. I’ve been to a local and famous one here in Alabama – Moundville. It has 26 Mississippian-era mounds. I’ve walked the mounds and climbed to the top of the tallest one. It is quite a task! Also, we are all Native Americans whether we originate in North, Central, or South America. I urge you to look up these USA Mounds and read more about them…they’re fasinating!

It comes down to the Spiritual beliefs of the diverse groups of Native Americans, either in North, Central, or South America. The natives of South and Central America’s belief system focused on "gods" "above" they thought they needed to be closer to the "gods". Here in what is now the U.S. the belief system was different. There were groups that did built mounds as discribed by other answers. Most of the natives of this continent believed in one Creator and while we did and do hold many other things in reverence we don’t worship them. In the southwest U.S. they build great Kivas which are sunken in the Earth, we believe in Mother Earth and are close to her and nature in general.

You might try leaning more about some of the great early civilizations the Native American of North America.. Ever hear of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico or Montezuma’s Castle or Wapatki Ruins, or Casa Grande in Arizona. Or the Cahokia Mounds in Missouri/Illinois. All were parts of great civilizations here.

There were similar constructions in the US. I think that you could check on the Mound Builders (Serpent Mound is an example) also check Cahokia, Illinois(also a hugh Mound Builder site.)
I think that you can check on the Natchez peoples ( they were said to have temple buildings also dedicated to the Sun ).
Info could also be found through the Museum of the American Indian in NYC.

the most basic reason is because we practiced our religions differently. those temples and structures were built for religious reasons, and the wealthy or high born. and to maintain them and the city you needed many many many people. to guard such a place you needed a full time army. you needed full time farmers…etc. but these great cities were also their downfall. they didnt move their crops, so they died out. they didnt have proper sewage drainage, and illnesses started to creep in. those cities rotted from inside out. and all that remains of those "grand" cities are those buildings. yet the NDN still has practiced our rights and ways the same way if not altered alil bit, since our ancestors walked this land.
