At this time of the year, this is not unusual as airline reservation numbers are ringing off the hook. They may have a certain time limit on how long to wait and then the line goes dead.
I would recommend calling really really late at night in the city where the airline is based at. That is usually the best time to call

On the same note have you ever talked to anybody at Expedia, Price Line, Orbitz, or TravelOcity?
This is another good reason to use a Travel Agent. They are there to help you and their services cost you nothing.
